Day 1

The Hunter – Stroud – Mountain Maid – Walcha
After collecting our provisions at Thornton, travel along Buckets Way to Silo Hill where we will enjoy morning tea overlooking Stroud Common. A local guide will then share their knowledge of this historic town and the story of the Church of England where Fred Ward (Captain Thunderbolt) was reportedly married to Mary Ann Bugg. Just outside Gloucester, visit Mountain Maid Gold Mine for a guided tour followed by a picnic lunch in the grounds. Next we begin our journey along Thunderbolts Way. Travel the 290 kilometres in total, passing Carsons Lookout and Apsley Water Falls, before arriving into Walcha forour overnight stay.

Day 2

Walcha – Thunderbolts Grave and Cave – Guyra – Motor Museum – Inverell
Our day begins with a visit to the Walcha Pioneer Cottage Musuem where some of Captain Thunderbolt’s pack saddles are on display. Continue on through the apple orchards to Thunderbolt’s Rock, a common haunt for Fred to lighten travellers’ loads as they crest the top. Arriving into Uralla, see the grave of Fred Ward before making our way to Guyra for lunch. This afternoon, complete our journey of Thunderbolts Way in Inverell, where we visit the National Transport Museum before checking into our accommodation.

Day 3

Inverell – Bendemeer – Nundle Woollen Mill – The Hunter
Heading south, travel through Captain Thunderbolt’s old stomping ground to Bendemeer and after morning tea, continue on to Nundle. Enjoy lunch in the local hotel before a tour of Nundle Woollen Mills, with time to browse the shop where there is a collection of apparel, homewares, gifts, books and kintting accessories, with a special emphasis on wool. This afternoon, re-join the New England Highway for our journey home.
