Home – Hobart
With fellow travellers coming from Brisbane, the Hunter and Sydney, on arrival into Hobart you will be greeted by our All Australian Journeys crew who will welcome you aboard. Travel to nearby Rosny Lookout offering panoramic views of Hobart across the River Derwent with the majestic Mt Wellington in the background. Cross the Tasman Bridge to Hobart City and tour historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place and the vibrant waterfront before settling into our accommodation.
Salamanka Markets – Spiky Bridge – Bicheno
Your day starts browsing the famous Salamanca Markets with the opportunity to taste local produce and purchase some local Tassie Christmas gifts. Mid morning, depart Hobart and follow the Tasman Highway via Orford and Triabunna with time to stop at Buckland Church to see the 14th century stained glass window. Later we pause at the convict built, Spiky Bridge and
then continue on to picturesque Freycinet National Park with its magnificent views and its jagged pink granite peaks, crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. Continue through Swansea to Bicheno, view the ‘Gulch’ fishing harbour and the ocean blowhole. At the East Coast Nature World learn about the threat to the Tasmanian devil and take an informative ride on the ‘Pelican Express’.
Bicheno – Pyengana – Lavender Farm – Launceston
The smell of fresh baked scones and dollop double cream will be our introduction to the award winning Pyengana Dairy. Later, take a short walk through the ancient myrtle rainforest of Weldborough Pass before travelling to Legerwood to admire the tree carvings commemorating the war heroes of the region. Continue on through the rich agricultural region of Scottsdale to Bridestowe Lavender Estate which will be in full bloom at this time of the year. Stroll through the endless fields of lavender and browse the gift shop and visitor centre. Settle in for the next three nights in Launceston.
Beaconsfield – Seahorse World – Tamar Valley – Country Club
This morning follow the Tamar River through to the Swiss village resort of Grindelwald. Call into Brady’s Lookout for magnificent views along the Tamar before arriving at Beaconsfield to visit the Grubb Shaft Mine and Museum with over 30 fascinating displays. The mine was brought to international attention with the miraculous survival of Todd Russell and Brant Webb after an accident on Anzac Day 2006. Next, visit Seahorse World at Beauty Point, a unique seahorse farm and aquarium for a tour and lunch. Cross the unusual Batman Bridge to the eastern side of the Tamar River and return to Launceston for free time to explore. Dinner tonight is at the Country Club with carols and Christmas lights viewing on our return journey to the hotel.
Launceston Christmas Day
Following breakfast there will be opportunity for those wishing to attend a local Christmas church service. Alternatively, the morning will be yours to enjoy at leisure. Lunch today will be at the hotel offering the traditional Christmas fare with seafood and all of the trimmings including luscious sweets to follow. This afternoon, enjoy a walk through the magnificent Cataract Gorge with its cliff-side gardens, peacocks, pools and suspension foot bridge, a lovely afternoon prior to returning to our hotel for a light dinner.
Launceston – Sheffield – Somerset
Departing Launceston, travel to the beautiful village of Deloraine. Admire the fascinating history of the region woven into silk quilts at “Yarns” before continuing on to Ashgrove Cheese and a chance to sample their award winning produce. Spend time in the town of Sheffield and admire the wonderful outdoor art gallery of impressive murals. Leaving Sheffield and heading north through Spreyton to Devonport, we follow the coastline to the lovely town of Penguin. Take time to enjoy an ice cream or stretch your legs as you look across Bass Strait. Continue through to the northern coastline at Somerset.
Somerset – Stanley – Cradle Mountain
After breakfast today, travel along the picturesque coastline to Wynyard and Table Cape. This area is famous for market gardens and even poppies. Arrive in historic Stanley nestled at the foot of an ancient volcanic core known as ‘The Nut’. Explore this quaint town with its terraces and chair lift access to the top of The Nut. Enjoy lunch overlooking Boat Harbour before arriving at the World Heritage Listed Cradle Mountain.
Cradle Mountain – Zeehan – Strahan
This morning we will tour Cradle Valley on board the shuttle bus. See picturesque Dove Lake, situated at the foot of the crags of Cradle Mountain and visit Waldheim forest, home of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer. Afterwards, continue through mountain ranges, past swift-flowing rivers, steep gorges and former mining towns. Tullah, one such town, has since served as a base for the construction of hydro electric power development and is now almost surrounded by superb lakes. Enjoy lunch at the Tullah Lodge before visiting the Zeehan Pioneer Museum and discover why the town was once known as “The Silver City”. Arrive into the picturesque harbourside village of Strahan with its shops and galleries, famous for their Huon pine. Settle into our accommodation overlooking the harbour for the next two nights.
Gordon River Cruise
Today we cruise the incomparable Gordon River into the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness - see a side of Tasmania like no other. Cross vast Macquarie Harbour, past Sarah Island, the worst convict settlement of all and follow the Gordon River through stands of ancient Huon pine, sassafras and myrtle rainforest to step ashore for a wilderness board-walk at Heritage Landing. Voyage to Hell’s Gates, the aptly named harbour entrance where many early ships were destroyed by ferocious ocean swells. On return to Strahan, there will be opportunity to explore the village including the Visitor Centre and Huon Pine Saw Mill. Enjoy the wonderful interactive play “The Ship That Never Was” before returning to your accommodation to freshen up for dinner.
Strahan – New Norfolk – Hobart
This morning we travel via Queenstown, spectacular Mt. Owen and the winding Gormanston Hill to cross Lake Burbury to enter the Wild Rivers National Park. Experience the wonders of Gondwanaland during a short rainforest walk to Nelson Waterfalls. At Derwent Bridge visit The Wall in The Wilderness, an extraordinary work of art being crafted, telling the story of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. In Tarraleah Gorge view the penstocks and workings of an early Hydro-electric installation before crossing the Central Plateau. Descend through hills and hop fields to historic New Norfolk before following the picturesque Derwent Valley to the city of Hobart for the next 3 nights.
Tahune Airwalk – The Apple Shed – New Years Eve
A leisurely start to our day as we head south through the apple orchards and fruit growing regions of the Huon Valley. The Tahune Air walk is a major attraction and was established in the Tahune State Forest at the junction of the Picton and Huon Rivers. Explore the Visitor Centre and take in the unique view from the 570 metre long tree tops walk through the magnificent canopy of the Tahune Forest. Spend some time in Geeveston admiring the beautiful local timber. Follow the Huon River to the Apple Shed for lunch which of course includes home made apple pie. After lunch we will learn more about the apple industry and the making of apple cider. From here we return to the city with a stop at Mount Nelson overlooking the Derwent River. Tonight we board one of the local boats for a dinner cruise along the Derwent, enjoy the commentary as well as experiencing the city from a whole different angle. Arrive back at the hotel where you may choose to stay up and welcome in the New Year.
Port Arthur Historic site
Travel via Sorell Causeway and Midway Point for our full day tour to the Tasman Peninsula. Take in magnificent views from the lookout above picturesque Eaglehawk Neck and Pirates Bay before continuing to the Port Arthur Convict Settlement. Within the 40 hectares of landscaped grounds lies a rich history of Australia’s convict past. Included in the entry is a guided walking tour, a short harbour cruise, access to the Visitor Centre and Interpretation Gallery as well as more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored gardens and houses to explore as you wish. On the return journey to Hobart take a short detour to spend time in the historic village of Richmond where you can view the spire of Australia’s oldest church through the arches of the oldest bridge.
Hobart – Home
This morning visit the beautiful Botanic Gardens featuring historic plant collections and a large number of significant trees, many dating from the nineteenth century. You might even find Peter Cundall’s veggie patch. It will then be time to bid a fond farewell to your Tasmanian Coach Captain after transferring to the airport for your flight back home.
