THE PASSION PLAY
Once a decade, the small German town of Oberammergau presents a historic and dramatic Passion Play, depicting the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Add a European holiday to your unforgettable Oberammergau experience to make the most of this special event.
HISTORY OF THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY
The performance in 2020 will be the 42nd, with more than 500,000 people expected to travel to Oberammergau to see one of the performances. Considered the worlds premiere passion play, 2,000 people from the village work together to deliver the spectacle. All participants in the play, from speaking roles, choir and orchestra to support crew must have been born in the village, or lived there for more than 20 years. The performance takes place over the course of eight hours, including a three hour interval for an enjoyable dinner. The play dates back to 1633, when the Black Plague was sweeping through Europe. The villagers of Oberammergau vowed that if God would spare their village, they would perform the play every 10 years to celebrate the life and death of Jesus. Miraculously, the village was spared, and the passion play continues to be presented to this day.
