Day 1

Brisbane – King Island
Today begins your getaway to a very beautiful part of Australia - King Island. Due to the connection flight required via Melbourne, our departure will be very early today. After your transfers to Brisbane Airport you will be met by our staff who will assist with your check-in. On arrival to King Island, travel to Boomerang by the Sea Motel (Ph 03 6462 1288) for a light lunch. King Island is one of Australia’s untapped island retreats. Wildly rugged, windswept and attractive; it boasts over 145km of coastline and a wide and unusual variety of seabirds and wildlife. Afternoon tour taking in the Kelp Processing Plant and Museum. Return to the motel where you will have a comfortable stay for the next 3 nights.

Day 2

Cape Wickham
This morning we head to Quarantine Bay and Whistler Point and on to Yellow Rock Beach where the endless sandy beach and rolling swells reflect a sense of freedom. From here you can look out to Christmas and New Year Islands. There will be time to see the Shannon wreck for those able to do the walk. Next we journey to Cape Wickham, the most northerly point of King Island, where from here it is 90km to Cape Otway on the Australian mainland. We will have morning tea and enjoy the impressive views from the area where Wickham Lighthouse stands. Made from locally quarried stone, the lighthouse stands 48m tall and is both the tallest in Australia, and the Southern Hemisphere. Continue on to a rare perched lake found in only three locations in the world - Pennys Lagoon where we will have lunch. Later, visit the famous King Island Dairy before returning to your motel late afternoon.

Day 3

Grassy
Today we travel to Naracoopa, a small settlement on the east coast where we will stop for morning tea. We travel across to the old mining town of Grassy for lunch and have the opportunity to see a disused Scheelite mine site and Kelp Craft where decorative hats, figurines and animals are made out of the local bull kelp, a craft now mastered on King Island. Continuing along the western coastline, we will see Ettrick Bay and the Calcified Forest. Next you will see the huge cliffs at Seal Rocks, one of the most spectacular areas on King Island before touring to the scenic southern end of the island, visiting the Electrical Generating Wind Farm which has been built in the “roaring 40’s” - the prevailing westerly winds which are a world class wind asset. After dinner, travel to Grassy to view the Penguin Parade. Please take warm clothes for tonight as the air may turn very chilly. Return to your motel late this evening.

B, L, D

Day 4

King Island – Brisbane
Relax as you eat breakfast before enjoying some morning touring. Depart for a town tour of Currie taking in the museum, Currie Harbour, Lighthouse and the Historic Boat House. Mid-morning we will transfer to the King Island Airport. Take time to purchase your own lunch during our transit in Melbourne before arriving back into Brisbane where our Cross Country Tours staff will have your transfers organised. We hope you have enjoyed your holiday on King Island and look forward to seeing you again soon.
