Day 1

Sydney – Narrabri
Depart Strathfield, Hornsby and Newcastle on your way to Thornton for morning tea and then lunch in the Upper Hunter Valley. In the afternoon cross the Breeza Plains to Gunnedah and then to Narrabri for the night.

Day 2

Narrabri – Mitchell
Travel north via Moree passing through prosperous black soil farms growing cereal crops or cotton. Mungindi, on the Barwon River at the NSW/QLD border, will be your first stop before lunch at the irrigation town of St George on the Balonne River. Continue north to Mitchell. Visit the artesian spa complex for a swim (own expense).

Day 3

Mitchell – Longreach
Today, travel through Augathella before passing through Tambo, the oldest town in Western Queensland. Lunch will be at Blackall, the location of the original black stump. Stop at Barcaldine, the birthplace of the Labor Party and the National Party and home to the new Tree of Knowledge memorial, where the spirit of the Australian worker lives on.

Day 4

Longreach – Stockman’s Hall of Fame – Qantas Museum
Visit the extensive Stockman’s Hall of Fame, developed to honour the pioneer’s contribution to the settlement of the outback. After lunch visit the Qantas Museum to understand the impact of the opening of air services for the outback. Take a guided tour of a 747 or 707 (own expense). Tonight enjoy a Sunset Billabong Cruise on the Thomson River. Be inspired by the brilliant colours reflecting off the water as the sun goes down before enjoying a traditional stockman’s dinner, bush poetry and Starlight’s Spectacular Sound and Light show.

Day 5

Longreach – Cloncurry
Heading north, stop at Winton with time to explore this heritage town, from dinosaurs to Arno’s Wall which is a living museum of household goods. Lunch at the famous Blue Heeler Hotel at Kynuna, which claims to be home to the iconic song, Waltzing Matilda. Drop into Walkabout Creek Hotel at the McKinlay, as seen in Crocodile Dundee, before arriving in the mining and cattle town of Cloncurry.

Day 6

Cloncurry – Adel’s Grove (Lawn Hill)
Enjoy morning tea at Burke and Wills Roadhouse, then travel to Adel’s Grove. Lawn Hill National Park is a tropical oasis with rainforest and paper bark trees surrounding crystal clear pools. Bring your swimmers as you take to the water at Indarri Falls where you will swim in the natural spa or enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as having some fun in the canoes. Accommodation is in either the permanently erected tents with facilities close by or the ensuited cabins - all providing comfortable, rustic accommodation. Our passengers say that the Adel’s Grove experience is one of the highlights of this great tour.

Day 7

Adel’s Grove (Lawn Hill)
This morning return to Lawn Hill National Park and experience the beauty of walking around the top of the gorge or the Island Stack, with great views over the surrounding countryside. Those feeling less energetic can walk around the base of the stack to the Wild Dog Dreaming Aboriginal Art Site, or the Cascades where you will see the formation of tufa and fossils occurring. You may wish to try the canoes again, and perhaps visit Rainbow Dreaming or take a tour of the world famous Riversleigh Fossil D Site (own expense).

Day 8

Lawn Hill – Karumba
Depart this natural oasis and head towards the Gulf, with lunch along the way to Normanton, established as a port during the Croydon Gold Rush, where the Burns Philp shipping company started out. Have a photograph taken with the largest crocodile ever killed up north, it is 33 feet long!. Later check into our accommodation at Karumba for the next two nights, with dinner in the local tavern looking across the gulf.

Day 9

Karumba Barramundi Farm – Gulflander and Sunset Cruise
Our day starts at the Barramundi Centre where we learn more of the research of these beautiful fish, be lucky enough to feed these giant fish and learn how they change sex and breed. Returning to Normanton to board the famous Gulflander train for part of the journey towards Croydon. Queensland Rail has been operating this service for over a hundred years and not much has changed in that time, bring your money as some of the best souvenirs can be purchased onsite. Late afternoon return to our accommodation to freshen up before boarding the Ferryman Cruise for a sunset cruise, nibbles and drinks as the sun sets across the Gulf. Dinner tonight at your own leisure.


Day 10

Karumba - Undara Lava Tubes
Saying goodbye to the Gulf, travel east with a stop at the early gold rush town of Croydon, then Georgetown where you will see the impressive Terrestrial, an extensive rock and minerals display. Upon arrival at Undara there will be time to explore the grounds. Your lodgings tonight are beautifully restored heritage train carriages. Each carriage contains two to three rooms, with luxurious furnishings (including new ensuites) set amongst the gum trees.

Day 11

Undara – Townsville
After a bush breakfast around the campfire you join a guided ranger walk in the unique tunnels on the boardwalk, these tunnels were formed by lava. Stop at the Three Rivers Hotel at Greenvale, made famous by Slim Dusty singing Stan Coster’s Golden Guitar-winning song, then continue over the range towards the coast.

Day 12

Townsville – Home
Today we farewell QLD with time to admire the beautifully appointed public land of the Strand on the waters edge of Townsville. Over our last morning tea, share your favourite moments from the past few days of the holiday that has taken us from the black soil plains of Namoi to the channel country of QLD as well as the open lands of the Gulf of Carpentaria and the amazing formations of the Undara Lava Tubes. Relax on the flight home to your capital city and your awaiting transfers.
