Day 1 Sun Oct 1

Your tour begins with a transfer to Brisbane Airport for your flight to Adelaide. On arrival, you will be met by our Coach Captain and Hostess before travelling via Port Wakefield near the head of St Vincent's Gulf to Moonta. This unique town is steeped in history and is known as "Australia's little Cornwall". A guided tour and train ride will take you past buildings listed in the National Trust Historic Trail. Settle in at the Kadina Gateway Motor Inn (Ph 08 8821 2777) for the next 2 nights.

Day 2 Mon Oct 2

After breakfast, travel through rich limestone areas which give Yorke Peninsula the reputation of having some of the richest farmland in Australia. Visit Minlaton, the home of Captain Harry Butler, who in 1919, made the first Australian "over water" mail service flight from Adelaide. See his famous 'Red Devil' monoplane now on display on the outskirts of town. Continue on to the peninsula's southern-most point - Innes National Park. Travel through Yorketown to Edithburgh and follow the eastern coastline and the Gulf of St Vincent to Androssan. Return to the motel for dinner.

Day 3 Tue Oct 3

This morning, travel to Port Broughton, a major port for fishing boats and also renowned for its deep sea prawns. Continue on through Port Pirie and Port Augusta to Whyalla, located on the shores of Spencer Gulf. Whyalla is a town famous for its heavy industry of enormous steel and iron works. This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of the Whyalla Steel Works where we'll hear the story behind more than 100 years of significant Australian iron and steel making history. Settle in at the Whyalla Foreshore Motor Inn (Ph 08 8645 8877) for our overnight stay.

Day 4 Wed Oct 4

After breakfast, view the largest provincial city in South Australia from Hummock Hill. As you join the Eyre Highway, observe the iron ore quarries at Iron Knob before entering the sheep and wheat country enroute to Kimba. Stop at the Kimba Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop, allowing time to photograph the 8 metre Big Galah and browse the locally mined and crafted jade. Continue to the holiday town and fishing port of Streaky Bay, where we will check in at the Streaky Bay Hotel/Motel (Ph 08 8626 1008) for our overnight stay.

Day 5 Thu Oct 5

Travel the western seaboard of the Eyre Peninsula and visit the spectacular natural formation of ancient pink granite called Murphy's Haystacks near Calca. View the fascinating rock formations from the Eye of the Needle Lookout near Port Kenny before following the scenic rugged coastline via Venus Bay to Elliston. This popular holiday destination is nestled amid cereal growing countryside and is well known for its artistic mural, covering over 500 square metres in area. Settle in for the next 3 nights at the Port Lincoln Hotel (Ph 08 8621 2000).

Day 6 Fri Oct 6

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Port Lincoln before stepping back in time during a visit to Koppio's Smithy Museum. Here, we will reminisce and remember the lifestyle of yesteryear before a picnic lunch. Drive inland, alive with birdlife and wildflowers as we travel back to Port Lincoln. Visit the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum which is quite unique. Not only does it have a slipway in full working order but most of the exhibits can be handled.

Day 7 Sat Oct 7

Whalers Way National Park reveals some of the most spectacular southern coastline. Casual clothes and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for today; but for those not wishing to journey far, there is plenty of spectacular scenery visible from near the coach. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the National Park before visiting Constantia, a group of furniture craftsmen with an international reputation for fine furniture and furniture design. Constantia is one of the world's last workshops accredited to the International Guild of Master Craftsmen.

Day 8 Sun Oct 8

Our journey takes us via Tumby Bay, which is well known for its white sandy beaches and unspoilt coastline, before visiting Cowell, known as one of the world's largest jade deposits and also for it's top quality oysters. Travel on to Port Augusta, situated at the head of the Spencer Gulf, which plays a major role for the Indian Pacific and Ghan rail links. This afternoon, arrive into Port Pirie where the largest lead smelters in the world treat the mineral from Broken Hill. Stay overnight at the Travelway Motel, Port Pirie (08 8632 2222).

Day 9 Mon Oct 9

This morning, travel into Adelaide and enjoy lunch before boarding your flight back to Brisbane, where our Cross Country Tours staff will have your transfers arranged. Thank you for travelling with us to this beautiful part of Australia; we look forward to seeing you on tour with us again soon.
