Day 1

Home – Port Adelaide
Fly in to the Adelaide Airport where our coach will take you the short journey to the Australian National Rail Museum at Port Adelaide. Rated as one of the best rail museums in the world, it is also home to the ‘Tea and Sugar Train’. Displays include some of the early dental and hospital carriages to some of the more recent surplus track laying equipment. This is a great introduction to the activities that are on track for the coming days. Checking into our hotel before dinner in the restaurant.

L, D

Day 2

Adelaide – Cockle Train
Visit the Mount Barker Rail Museum and Workshop. After morning tea, board the Cockle Train and enjoy a run along the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, across farmlands and coastal dunes from Goolwa to Middleton via Port Elliot, to Victor Harbor. This afternoon, relax with free time to explore South Australia’s premier bustling seaside village. Perhaps catch the only Horse Drawn Tram in the Southern Hemisphere over to Granite Island, where you can purchase your own lunch or browse the main street of Victor Harbor. Later in the afternoon, at the call of the whistle, catch the return train to Goolwa to re-join the coach for the trip back to Adelaide.

B, D

Day 3

Adelaide – St Kilda – Yorke Peninsula
Our first stop today is St Kilda for a guided tour of the Tram Museum. This museum now houses a collection of every electric tram that ever ran on the Adelaide system. They also have a couple of kilometres of private track which runs out to the Gulf which we will have a ride on. This tram yard has a number of A & B Class as well as the ‘Bendigo’ trams which were built in Adelaide and used in other cities. Following fresh fish and chips from the jetty, we will travel through Australia’s richest wheat and barley growing area. Admire the local beaches such as Tiddy Widdy, home to Australia’s Blue Swimmer Crab. Later head towards the Spencer Gulf passing through the grain town of Maitland, arriving mid-afternoon at Kadina for our overnight stay.

B, L, D

Day 4

Kadina – Moonta – Port Augusta
Our day starts with some time in the bustling seaside town of Wallaroo. Next is historic Moonta in the region known as the copper triangle, and home to the richest cooper mine in Australia at the end of the 19th century. Visit the Moonta Mines Museum and enjoy a ride on the narrow gauge tourist railway through the grounds and past the buildings of this once prosperous mine. Heading back to Port Broughton, you will have some free time to purchase your lunch, walk along the jetty and just to admire one of the prettiest seaside towns. This afternoon, a short stop at Port Pirie to visit the shark museum adds a little more interest to the waters of Spencer Gulf. Late this afternoon we arrive at the very tip of the Gulf, in Port Augusta.

B, D

Day 5

Port Pirie – Quorn Rail Day – Peterborough
This is one of South Australia’s most exciting railway days. Our day starts at the Port Augusta Railway Station where we board the famous Afghan Express, for the trip to Quorn. This train dates back to the 1920-30s when the Ghan passed through Quorn on its way to Alice Springs. Our train is a NM25 Steam Locomotive and was used until 1956 when the new standard gauge railway bypassed this famous route. About half way along our journey we will stop at Woolshed Flats where we will meet up with the Pitchi Ritchie Explorer, and from here do a ‘double header’ into Quorn, one of the few days in the year where you can ride two very famous trains. Mid afternoon our journey continues to Peterborough, famous for the largest roundhouse in the Southern Hemisphere. After dinner tonight we visit the roundhouse for a very unique sound and light show.

B, L, D

Day 6

Peterborough – Barmera
Returning to Steamtown, a rail enthusiast will share some of the projects that they have recently completed, such as the repair of the NSU55, an early 1950 diesel loco used on the Ghan to Alice. Another successful restoration was on the Narrow Gauge Y82 Steam train. At Terowie, stand on the deserted station and imagine the scene when General Douglas McArthur vowed to return and fight after the fall of Singapore. This town is also famous for the junction of the three different rail gauges. At Burra we follow the river to the Murray and eventually Loxton for our overnight stay.

B, L, D

Day 7

Barmera – Bendigo
Saying goodbye to South Australia at Pinnaroo, we cross the border in to Victoria, where our journey cuts right across the centre of the state, skirting around the Big Desert, through a real patchwork of crops and landscapes, before arriving in Bendigo.

B, L, D

Day 8

Bendigo – Puffing Billy Luncheon – Melbourne
Travel to Belgrave where we join the world famous Puffing Billy on the special Steam and Cuisine Service. This silver service three course menu will be served to us in our first class carriages. We hope to have a technical engineer volunteer in our carriage to give some more background information on the operations—there are over 300 volunteers almost every day of the year. Enjoy recounting some of the day’s stories over dinner.

B, L, D

Day 9

V Line to Castlemaine – Victorian Goldfields Rail – Talking Tram
Our day starts at Southern Cross Station, boarding the 90 minute service to Castlemaine. Arrive with time to photograph our next steam train. Our run today is about 17 km through grazing country—once lucrative gold fields. This line was closed in 1979, a section of it re-opened in 1986, and the final section re-opened in 2004. The steam train may be either the Steam K160 or J549. Enjoy lunch before boarding our coach for an afternoon of fun on the famous Bendigo Talking Tram tour. The tram stops at the Tram Museum where you can look inside many of the different styles of trams. Tram owners from all over Australia send their trams here to be refurbished. Our journey home will be by coach with an early dinner in Lygon street famous for its hundreds of restaurants and cafes.

B, L, D

Day 10

Melbourne Free Day – Tramcar Restaurant
Today is your day to explore the city—museums, gardens and shopping precincts, or just jump on a tram and go to St Kilda. Tonight our last treat is a unique dinner experience aboard the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, with a luxurious three course dinner, including drinks, whilst traveling through the lights and night sights of Melbourne, a great way to round out a top holiday.

B, D

Day 11

Melbourne – Home
Following breakfast it’s only a short drive to Tullamarine airport for our flights home. As you look out the window ponder the early days when a journey like this would have taken days and no doubt you would be covered in soot—but you would experience the real journey.
