Day 1

Australia – Sri Lanka – Negombo
Your tour begins with your flight from Australia via Singapore to Colombo where we are greeted by our Tour Guide who will take care of us throughout our tour of Sri Lanka. Arrive late evening and transfer to our hotel for check in.
2 nights Negombo: Jetwing Sea Hotel (4 star)

Day 2

Negombo
After a leisurely breakfast, enjoy a relaxing morning at our beach-front hotel. This afternoon we board our coach and enjoy a highlights tour of Negombo which includes the amazing fish markets, plus several buildings that date back to the Dutch and Portuguese colonial days including the Dutch Fort and Catholic Church. The sandy beaches, sea, colourful wooden boats and markets provide a scenic backdrop. Arrive back at our hotel before dinner.

Day 3

Negombo – Pinnawala – Sigiriya
Today we depart early from Negombo and travel up to the Central Province region which is dominated by Sigiriya Rock. We stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where we will see elephants up close in a natural setting, bathing in the Maha Oya River. From 5 baby elephants when it opened in 1975, the orphanage now has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the world. After leaving Pinnawala we continue our drive into the Central Province Region, arriving at the iconic Sigiriya Rock for photos. Here we visit the Sigiriya Museum which has a diorama of the site and provides an excellent overview
and explanation of Sigiriya’s cultural importance. After leaving “Lion Rock” we check into the beautiful Aliya Resort and Spa which offers wonderful views in the distance of the sprawling paddy fields.
3 nights Sigiriya: Aliya Resort & Spa (5 star)

Our guide will cover the history of Sigiriya "Lion Rock" which is one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka. Referred to by locals as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", this ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance. The palace is located on a massive rocky plateau 370 metres above sea level and includes remnants of a ruined palace surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains. Please note: the journey to the top and return is some 3,000 steps and over some uneven terrain. A high level of fitness is required.

Day 4

Ancient City of Anuradhapura
After breakfast we visit one of the better kept ruins of Ancient Ceylon - the UNESCO World Heritage City of Anuradhapura. Re-founded in 4th Century BC, Anuradhapura became the capital of Ceylon and the sacred city of Buddhism, home to the most renowned relic, the sacred Bodhi tree, planted in 3rd Century BC. This afternoon, our guide will introduce us to some of Anuradhapura’s sacred sites such as the Siri Maha Bodhi, Ruvanveliseya Dagaba, Samadhi Buddha and the Twin Ponds, all rich in Buddhist faith culture and practices. Return to our resort for late lunch and a relaxing afternoon poolside before meeting up for dinner.

Day 5

Ancient City of Polonnaruwa – Elephant and Wildlife Jeep Safari
After breakfast at the hotel we proceed to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a World Heritage site which was built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD. We then visit sites including the Royal Palace, Audience Hall, Pool, Sacred Quadrangle “The Vatadage”, Shiva Temple, Lankathilake, Kiri Vehera and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. Our last stop is at the Gal Viharaya where we will see 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in 'Upright', 'Sedentary' and 'Recumbent' postures carved out of rock. After leaving the ancient city, visit the Polonnaruwa Woodcarving Factory before lunch. In the afternoon we proceed to the Minneriya National Park where we experience an Elephant and Wildlife Jeep Safari. Dry zone plant and animal species are common and elephants are in plenty. After our safari we return to our hotel to freshen up before dinner.

Day 6

Sigiriya – Matale – Kandy
An early start today as we travel to the spiritual city of Kandy, surrounded by greenery and the great Mahaweli River. On the way, we stop in Matale, where we visit the extraordinarily colourful and ornate Sri Muthumariamman Hindu Temple. Next we visit the Baba and Island Batik Factory to see true quality design, artistry and workmanship of Batik, an ancient art of painting cloth. We then get to experience the traditional spices that Sri Lanka is renowned for at the Ranweli Spice Garden. Take the opportunity to sample scents and flavours such as cinnamon, ginger, pepper, vanilla and cardamom. After lunch at the gardens, we continue our journey down to Kandy where, after checking into our hotel, we’ll enjoy a Cultural Kandyan dance and fire eating performance before returning to our hotel for dinner.

Day 7

Botanical Gardens – Tooth Relic Temple
This morning we take a guided stroll through the lush Royal Botanical Gardens of Peredeniya, established in 1821 on over 140 acres, found in a loop in the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. Today the Gardens have one of the largest collections of around 4,000 species of flora from sub-tropical climates around the world. Leaving the gardens we travel up to E.W. Balasuriya & Co Gem Factory, where we enjoy a wonderful insight into the history and mining of gemstones in Sri Lanka and also have a chance to check out the beautiful stones and set jewellery pieces in the showroom. The National Gem of Sri Lanka is the blue sapphire, one of the most celebrated gem varieties in the world. The world’s biggest blue sapphire was recently found in a Sri Lankan mine, weighing an astonishing 1,404 carats. Following lunch in the restaurant we take a stroll past the beautiful Kandy Lake on our way to the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) the most important shrine in the country, which houses a relic of a tooth of Buddha taken from his funeral pyre in 543 BC. Return to the hotel later in the day for dinner.

Day 8

Labookellie Tea Centre – Hakgala Gardens - Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast we depart Kandy and proceed to the Nuwara Eliya via the stunning Ramboda Falls and Labookellie Tea Centre. Our drive to Nuwara Eliya is a picturesque journey through the mountains and Sri Lanka’s tea growing centre, where we will relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys and the bright flash of the “tea pluckers” in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise coloured saris. We stop at Ramboda Falls and after taking in the spectacular views and enjoying lunch above the falls, we continue our scenic drive through the tea country before arriving at the Labookellie Tea Centre for a short
factory tour and a cuppa in the tearooms. We then continue through the delightful township of Nuwara Eliya before arriving at the Hakgala Botanical Garden. Heading back into Nuwara Eliya we pass by Lake Gregory, Nuwara Eliya Race Course and the picturesque 18 hole golf course. We also pass by stunning English styled country homes and gardens then check into our hotel before dinner. We will have time to take a stroll across to the Grand Hotel where we are able to admire the beautiful gardens surrounding the Elizabethan-era style hotel.

Day 9

Nuwara Eliya – Ella Gap - Yala National Park
Wildlife Safari
From Nuwara Eliya, we descend down through the panoramic hill country to the jungles of Yala. Our route takes us through stunning countryside littered with valleys of colourful houses and terraced veggie gardens, glorious waterfalls and amazing gorges. We arrive in the small village of Ella where we enjoy beautiful views of Ella Gap and Adams Peak. We enjoy a comfort stop at the Ella Mountain Heaven Hotel before stopping again at Ravana Falls for a photo shoot. We then continue our drive down to Yala enjoying a late lunch on arrival at our hotel. Midafternoon we visit Yala National Park which is famous for the elusive leopard. While there, we will take a Jeep Safari accompanied by a naturalist guide where we may also see the Sloth Bear, Crocodiles and the Asian Elephant. Return to our hotel to freshen up before dinner.

Day 10

Yala – Galle - Bentota
After breakfast our journey skirts the sea shore and for mile upon mile, bay succeeds bay. Arrive in Matara, the most important settlement on the south coast. The town contains many remnants of Sri Lanka’s colonial past and is divided by the island’s third longest river, the Nilwala Ganga – a beautiful wide expanse of water that splits the old town from the new. Next we travel to the city of Galle. Once the chief port of Ceylon, this city has now been declared a World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most well preserved colonial-era cities in South East Asia. Enjoy lunch at the Galle Fort precinct before taking a walking tour through the cobbled stone pathways of the Galle Fort. There will also be an opportunity to see the Dutch museum and the Dutch church within the precinct. This afternoon we visit the Tsunami Photo Museum and also the Tsunami Monument. On the 26th of December 2004 the tsunami hit countries across the Indian Ocean with Sri Lanka also in its destructive path. This afternoon
we check into our hotel with time to relax before dinner.

Day 11

Tuk Tuk by Brief Gardens - Half Day Free
After breakfast we will experience a unique part of Sri Lanka as we board our Tuk Tuk with Sri Lankan driver/guide and depart inland to the unique Brief Gardens and House. The estate was formerly a rubber plantation and offers excellent views and unique artwork and wonderful murals of Sri Lankan life. The murals were created by Australian artist Donald Friend, who originally came for six days but stayed six years. Other guests, Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier stayed here during the filming of Elephant Walk in 1953. Later in the morning we return to our resort by Tuk Tuk enjoying some very special commentary and sightseeing with our Sri Lankan driver/guide. The remainder of the day is at leisure where we can relax at the hotel, take a stroll along the beach, enjoy some downtown shopping, a spa treatment or just relax by the pool. Tonight we all meet for dinner at the hotel.

Day 12

Galle – Colombo
We make our way up to the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. After a short introductory tour of Colombo we arrive at the Old Dutch Hospital Precinct comprising cafes, restaurants and retail shops. Please note lunch is at own cost. This afternoon we check into our hotel for some free time prior to joining back together for our farewell dinner at the hotel.

Day 13

Colombo – Australia
This morning after breakfast we board our bus where our guide will introduce us to some of Colombo’s curious sites such as the vibrant markets of Pettah, Independence Memorial Hall, Town Hall, Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre plus more. The rest of the day is at leisure before transferring late evening to the Colombo International Airport for our flight back to Australia.

In Flight – Home
After our overnight flight via Singapore, we arrive back in Australia with many wonderful highlights to reflect on from our tour of Sri Lanka. On arrival, our staff will be there to greet you and will have your transfers arranged.

You do require a visa when travelling to Sri Lanka. A visa can be applied for via the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) official website of the Department of Immigration & Emigration of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The ETA is issued through an on-line system. No passport copies, documents or photographs are required. There is no requirement to endorse the ETA on the passport. On arrival at the port of entry in Sri Lanka produce your passport to the immigration officer at the port of entry to obtain the necessary clearance. It is advisable for you to bring a copy of the ETA approval notice along with you. This approval incurs an administration fee and is not included in your tour fare. All passengers travelling will be contacted with further information after the final payment due date.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

ACCOMMODATION – If you do not have a travelling companion, we will make every endeavour to put you in touch with another traveller of the same gender, otherwise single accommodation will be charged.

TAXI PICKUP* – A taxi home pickup and return is provided to persons who reside in the greater Brisbane area. That is, anywhere from Bribie Island in the north, Ipswich & surrounds in the west to Jacobs Well in the south. Special arrangements can be made for travellers living outside these areas.

TRANSFERS FROM THE HUNTER AND CENTRAL COAST – Various pickup and return locations are available throughout the Hunter and Central Coast. Transfers to Sydney Airport are included in your fare.

PASSPORTS – It is essential that all Australian passports have at least 6 months’ validity from the time of tour return (i.e. Expires no earlier than September 21, 2018). If you do not have an Australian Passport you may require additional documentation.

FITNESS TO TRAVEL - It is essential that your Doctor is aware of your wish to undertake this tour. Please make your Doctor aware that you will have approximately 8 hour flight to Singapore and a 4 hour flight to Colombo. Your Doctor will be able to guide you and recommend any precautions you may need to take. If you require a walking aid or have any medical condition it is also essential for you to address this with us. reasonable amount of fitness is required for this tour and please be aware that showers may be over baths.

MEDICATION - It is essential that you take enough prescription medication with you for the entire tour. Please note that all medication (both prescription and non-prescription) must be in its original packaging. Please carry a letter from your Doctor authorising your medication for customs purposes. It is strongly recommended that you also carry something for sniffles and coughs, and the relief of diarrhoea, even if you don’t use it. Pharmacies may not always be easily accessible.

VACCINATIONS - Please consult your GP or Travel Doctor to obtain specific travel health advice in relation to individual needs and intended travel including advice on vaccinations, anti-malarial and other medications based on past vaccination history and present medical conditions.

LUGGAGE – Airlines require that your suitcase must not weigh more than 20kg and total linear measurement (i.e. length+depth+width) not exceed 150cm. As a customs requirement, you need to be able to handle your luggage yourself at the airports. Whilst on tour your luggage will be delivered to your room at each motel.

HAND LUGGAGE – Is to be no more than 6kg and total linear measurement not exceeding 100cm. Cabin luggage must consist of 1 item maximum. (E.g. handbag or camera bag or travel bag.) Please note: strict rules apply to items carried in your hand luggage during flights, including sharp objects, liquids, aerosols and gels. We will advise you of these rules at the information session prior to tour, or you may contact our office for further details.

ITINERARY AND TOUR ARRANGMENTS – There may be a need to alter or amend this itinerary, accommodation or sightseeing arrangements from those published with little or no notice. This may be due to road conditions, weather, safety factors, re-schedule of services and other operational considerations at the time. Such decisions will be made in the interest of the passengers’ comfort and safety.

INFORMATION SESSION – An information session will be held approximately two weeks prior to departure where you will receive all documentation including airport transfer times.

MONEY –The Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency required for this tour and credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are generally accepted. Further details will be advised at the Information Session prior to your departure.
